Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions Bets

Coming off their bye week to lick their latest wounds, the Detroit Lions return to action when they visit the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. Sunday at Heinz Field. The Lions need their first win and there is plenty of Lions betting action against the inconsistent Steelers.

The Lions were hammered 44-6 by the Philadelphia Eagles two weeks ago at Ford Field. The Eagles had their way with the Lions defense by rushing for 236 yards.

Things might not get any easier for the Lions this week in pursuit of their first win. The Steelers (5-3) are on a four-game winning streak and rookie running back Najee Harris is emerging as a top rushing threat following a slow start to the season.

The Lions also haven’t won a game in Pittsburgh in 66 years. That last victory came in 1955, a 31-28 triumph at Forbes Field, the venerable baseball park the Steelers haven’t called home since 1957.

The Steelers rallied for a 29-27 victory over the Chicago Bears at home Monday night.

Lions-Steelers Betting Preview

Jared Goff has been a disappointment in his first season as the Lions’ quarterback after being acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in an offseason trade. Exacerbating matters is the QB he was traded for, Matthew Stafford has guided the Rams to a 7-2 start.

Goff is averaging 9.7 yards a completion, which ranks 31st in the NFL, and underscores the Lions’ inability to amass chunk plays. Unsurprisingly, they are 21st in the league in passing yards, 26th in total yardage, and 29th in points scored.

Coach Dan Campbell says he plans to open the offense this week and allow Goff to take more downfield shots. The Lions’ lack of wide receiver depth has contributed to the dearth of big plays but Campbell plans to split rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown wide against the Steelers.

Brown is averaging just 9.3 yards a catch as he has 27 receptions for 250 yards. The fourth-round draft pick had a 12.8 average during three college seasons at Southern California.

The offense should get a boost from the expected return of left tackle Taylor Decker, who has been out all season with an injured left index finger. Goff will need the protection as Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt had three sacks against the Bears to raise his season total to 11 ½.

The Lions will need to be aware of Steelers rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth, who has become veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s favorite target in the red zone. Freiermuth caught two touchdown passes Monday night and has three in the last two games.

Steelers -8.5 (-110) Barstool

The Steelers’ average margin of victory has been just 4.5 points during its winning streak. Yet the Lions’ average margin of defeat in 2021 has been nearly two touchdowns.

Look for the Steelers to finally have a bit of an easy day.

The Lions’ plan to air things out on offense sounds like fun but might be hard to execute. The Steelers have a strong pass rush and are 15th in the league in pass defense.

Prediction

The Steelers haven’t won a game by at least nine points since beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-3 last season in Week 11. Those Jaguars finished the season 1-15. These Lions will continue their march to 0-17.
