Goalie Ville Husso is well enough to start tonight against the Dallas Stars. But the Detroit Red Wings have already decided to take Alex Nedeljkovic on their road trip.

Nedeljkovic is officially assigned to the Grand Rapids, but he has stayed in Detroit just in case Husso injury flares up. Detroit plays in Carolina Tuesday night.

“The lower-body injury, just the back to backs, we’ll see how he responds,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s been okay and again, just maybe what we’re trying to do with getting him past his threshold a little bit in workload, we’ll have to decide where we’re at. But of course we would want the extra goalie to be available.”

The Red Wings can’t simply make a regular recall of Nedeljkovic because they have used up their four post-trade deadline recalls.

“Obviously (Nedeljkovic) played three or four really strong games for us of late,” Lalonde said. “Would love to get him in for one of the last couple of games, depending on where Ville’s at.”

Undisclosed Injury

The Red Wings haven’t identified the exact injury of Husso’s injury. When Lalonde was asked whether Husso might require off-season surgery, he said: “Potentially. I think that’s probably what they’re evaluating. Again, that’s not my expertise. Obviously it’s something they’re trying to evaluate throughout. My gut now, with how well he’s responded over the last couple of weeks, I don’t know if that’s an option.”

The Red Wings have called up Taro Hirose from Grand Rapids under emergency conditions. Adam Erne is sidelined.

“I’ll be surprised if (Erne’s) not in for us tomorrow,” Lalonde said. “Just a little illness he’s been dealing with.”
