When you ask hockey fans to name their favorite hockey movie, many of them gleefully say the 1977 Classic Slap Shot starring Paul Newman as iconic player coach Reggie Dunlop. The movie had modest box office success, but today it is viewed as a cult classic.

That’s why the Dunlop skates that Newman  wore in the movie were recently auctioned off by Sotherbys for $25,400.

The late Newman had played some hockey as a youngster and once said that filming Slap Shot was the most fun he ever had on a set.

Don’t be too impressed by what Newman’s Dunlop skates fetched. In 2017, a Newman Rolex watch sold for a then-record. $17.8 million.

Red Wings Offseason

The Red Wings offered this interesting note in their year-in-review package. Moritz Seider led all NHL defensemen (22 years of age or younger) in games played (82), assists (37), points (42), hits (207) and blocks (190) in 2022-23. Seider’s 207 hits tied the franchise record originally set by Justin Abdelkader in 2015-16. Additionally, his 190 blocks are the most by any Red Wings skater in a single season, passing Niklas Kronwall’s total of 177 in 2011-12. In all, Seider has racked up 351 blocks since making his NHL debut in 2021-22, trailing only Brayden McNabb (377), Jacob Trouba (373) and Andrew Peake (366) for the league’s most in that span.
