The Daily: Kane Gives Red Wings Confidence; Five Teams In On Tanev

Patrick Kane, Detroit Red Wings

Patrick Kane’s overtime game-winner is a perfect illustration of what he has brought to the Detroit Red Wings.

Alex Lyon’s presence as starting goalie and Detroit’s improved depth have contributed mightily to the team’s presence this morning in a playoff spot. This season, the Red Wings have more players who can deliver game-winning performances.

But Kane has brought confidence to this team, as evidenced by his play on the game-winner. He owns the offensive game, always knowing where to go and what to do.  The Red Wings play differently when he is on the ice. They enter the zone cleaner and control the puck more effectively.

“There’s goals out there that we couldn’t find last year,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “We find that throughout all the guys. Of course, Kane, (Alex) DeBrincat, additions like that, (Daniel) Sprong. With that depth and that star, we’re finding some of those goals.”

That’s why GM Steve Yzerman wants to re-sign Kane as soon as possible.

  • Sebastian Cossa has been a difference-maker for the Grand Rapids Griffins over the past two months.
  • The Red Wings rewarded Michael Rasmussen with a $12.8 million four-year deal because he is a devoted team player.

Calgary: Reports say that the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars and perhaps the Colorado Avalanche are talking to Calgary Flames about acquiring rental Chris Tanev. The Flames are looking for a first-round pick in the deal, and that could be thinning the list of suitors. He certainly would be a good fit for the Red Wings, but GM Steve Yzerman has to concern himself with team chemistry. Detroit players believe in themselves at this point.

Chicago: Colin Blackwell embodies the attitude that the Chicago Blackhawks desperately need.

Florida: Anthony Stolarz’s performance level with the Florida Panthers is going to earn him a big pay day.

New Jersey: James Nichols writes about the hints that New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes isn’t 100% healthy

Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Flyers reportedly are working on a contract extension for Nick Seeler. Contenders around the NHL will be disappointed if that gets done.

San Jose: Mike Hoffman’s 26-game goal-scoring drought is the longest of his NHL career. San Jose Sharks
