The Daily: Bruins Stay With Goalie Rotation; Perron’s Outlook

Jeremy Swayman’s 2-0 start isn’t convincing Boston Bruins coach Jim Montgomery to abandon his plan to rotate his goalies in the postseason. The expectation is Linus Ullmark will start tonight’s Game 4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“We’re following the plan that we had set in place,” Montgomery replied when asked if he was sticking to the rotation.

You may detect just a hint of coyness in that response. It’s the postseason. Coaches hate to lay all of their cards on the table.

All we know for sure is Montgomery seems willing to buck the time-honored NHL tradition of sticking with one goalie for the playoffs. The Bruins had a regular-season rotation and Montgomery is willing to stick with it.

For now.

Swayman had has stopped 63 of 66 shots in his two wins for a .955 save percentage. Is Swayman in the Maple Leafs’ heads a bit? Maybe. Ullmark, meanwhile, gave up three goals and owned a .912 save percentage in his start against Toronto.

If Toronto ties the series by beating Ullmark, it will become harder for the Bruins to continue the rotation.

• The Grand Rapids Griffins will open the NHL playoffs tonight on the road with a game against the Rockford IceHogs.
• Moritz Seider (Germany) and Lucas Raymond (Sweden) would need a big insurance policy before they could play for their countries in the World Championships. They both will be unrestricted free agents and would need protection from catastrophic injury
• Bob Duff explores whether the Detroit Red Wings have enough cap space to re-sign David Perron. It really depends on whether GM Steve Yzerman can persuade Patrick Kane to re-sign.

Derek Lalonde was named as one of John Hynes’ assistant coaches for Team USA at the upcoming World Championships in Czechia. Detroit goalie coach Alex Westlund will serve as Team USA’s goalie coach. Alex Lyon will be one of USA’s goaltenders. Dylan Larkin is also on the team.
