The Daily: What’s Up With Red Wings Goalies; Florida Cup Frenzy

Bob Duff’s story about John Lethemon heading to Finland to play next season further supports the notion that the Red Wings are probably looking for a veteran goalie, preferably with NHL experience, to play with Sebastian Cossa in Grand Rapids next season.

We can guess Carter Gylander will start in Toledo with the Griffins-signed Jan Bednar as his tandem partner.

Lethemon’s departure isn’t a surprise. He is 27, meaning he is beyond the age when he could be considered a prospect. The Red Wings signed him last year when they were looking to stabilize their goaltending top to bottom in the organization.

But signing of Gylander, coupled with the anticipated arrival of Trey Augustine (maybe at the end of his sophomore season), made it clear that Lethemon won’t be in the Red Wings plans. It makes perfect sense for Lethemon to explore more lucrative offers in Europe.

Meanwhile, we can expect the Red Wings to add a goalie after July 1. They could bring back Michael Hutchinson, but it would seem he might look for a greater opportunity elsewhere. It’s likely that Cossa is going to play the majority of games. But the newcomer, if he has NHL experience, might be viewed as the Detroit No. 3 goalie. Thee Red Wings still want Cossa to get more AHL experience.
