Injury will prevent one of the members of the core of the Detroit Red Wings from participating in training camp, as well as the entire NHL preseason.

When the Red Wings take the ice in Traverse City, Michigan, for training camp on Thursday, defenseman Simon Edvinsson won’t be lacing up his skates.

“The only player as of today who’s not ready to go is Simon Edvinsson,” Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman said of the club’s training camp roster. “He’ll be out for a few weeks.

“He is dealing with a lower-body injury.”

Among Red Wings defensemen last season, the 6-foot-6, 209-pound Edvinsson was second in goals (seven) and points (31). Edvinsson was third on the club in time on ice (21:07). He also recorded a team-best plus-12 rating.

Yzerman is confident that Edvinsson should be back in time for Detroit’s October 9 regular-season opener against the Montreal Canadiens.

“We’ll have him ready to go sometime around the start of the regular season,” Yzerman said.

Bear Loaded For Red Wings Training Camp

On a positive note, winger Carter Bear, the Red Wings’ 2025 first-round draft pick, will be on the ice to start training camp on Thursday. Recovering from an Achilles injury he suffered late last season while playing for the Tri-City Americans of the WHL, Bear was held out of Detroit’s prospect games against the Dallas Stars in Frisco, Texas.

“Yeah, Carter’s fully cleared to go,” Yzerman said. “The decision of the performance staff was to hold him out (of the rookie games). He hasn’t really played games. He’s been practicing, but he hasn’t played since March.

He’s been practising and skating with the guys, and the staff’s thought was that instead of throwing him right into a game in Dallas, the next step is here in training camp.

“Get him into more intense practice, some scrimmaging, and the Red and White game down in Grand Rapids on Sunday.

“Then we’ll get him into a preseason game. So he’s fine. “
