Detroit Hockey Now’s Red Wings Prospect Goalie Ratings

Published

Erik Gustafsson / Michal Postava

The Detroit Red Wings have not drafted and fielded a starting-quality NHL goalie since Petr Mrazek. Sebastian Cossa, Detroit’s 2021 first-round pick, is looking to change that. Today, the 23-year-old netminder is leading the Grand Rapids Griffins to the best start in the AHL’s 90-year history.

Detroit fans are clamoring for him to get the call-up to Detroit this season.

But probably the best aspect of Cossa’s success and the Red Wings’ current situation is that they have several goalies developing across almost every level of hockey, and many are having spectacular years.
For the first time in a long time, the Red Wings boast an intriguing and deep goalie pipeline. Today, Detroit Hockey Now will be ranking the Red Wings’ prospects in net behind top-ranked Sebastian Cossa.

2A: Michal Postava

The Detroit Red Wings signed Michal Postava out of the Czech National League this past summer, and that move seemed to be paying dividends before an injury that sidelined the 23-year-old netminder for almost two full months. He beat the Chicago Wolves 4-1 in his first game back from the injury. Before the injury, Postava was part of the AHL’s best tandem, playing with Cossa as the Griffins enjoyed the best start in the team’s history behind the two young netminders. Before his injury, Postava had a 4-0-0 record with a 2.15 GAA and .936 sv %. That was only slightly behind Cossa this season, which is nothing to scoff at.

Last year, Postava held a .921 sv % and 2.39 GAA as he led his team to the Czech Extraliga Championship title. If the Red Wings do call up Cossa sometime this year, he should be more than capable of handling things in Grand Rapids once he returns.  At the start of the season, Postava was playing his first games in North America, and he was already inspiring debates about who the better goalie was in the tandem.

2B: Trey Augustine

Augustine should be familiar to most Michigan-based fans, as the local South Lyon product has been playing for the Michigan State Spartans for the past three years. As the Spartans’ netminder, Augustine has improved every year with the team, and decided to return for his junior season after falling short of a National Championship with the Green and White last year. With a 1.71 GAA and .937 sgsv %, the Spartans, currently ranked #3, have a real chance of winning an NCAA title this year, especially if Augustine continues to lead the team.

Augustine is an incredible young netminder, but the fact that he has not yet inked the deal and decided to stay in college does lead some to wonder if he intends to turn pro for Detroit with a crowded pipeline in the AHL right now.

3: Carter Gylander

Gylander has been with the Red Wings the longest of any goalie on this list (191st, 2019). The 24-year-old Gylander spent almost all of last season with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye after the end of his career at Colgate University. He and the Walleye up short of the Kelly Cup in his first season as the team’s full-time starter. Gylander’s hard work and time have been rewarded as he has been called up to fill in for Postava to start in a handful of games for the Griffins so far this season, posting a 6-0-2 record and 1.57 GAA.

He also got his first shutout at the AHL level in a game on Dec. 21st, helping the Griffins extend their league-best record. Gylander doesn’t project to start for any extended period in the NHL, but he could be proving his case for a couple of injury call-ups in the future.

4: Michal Pradel

Pradel arrived from Slovakia with the Tri-City Storm in the USHL in February and played in 14 games late in their season, recording a 9-4-0 record with a .899 save percentage. The 18-year-old was drafted by the Red Wings 75th overall in the 2025 draft and was one of Slovakia’s goalies for the U-18 World Junior Championship. In his Draft +1 year, Pradel has been lighting up the USHL, having been named player of the week twice. After being claimed by the Regina Pats, he expressed an interest in playing for a college team.
In 23 games, Pradel is 9-9-3, tied for the third-best save percentage in the USHL with a .916 save percentage and 2.46 GAA. The young goalie is putting up great numbers in the juniors, and it will be interesting to watch going into next year if he decides to move on from Tri-City.

5: Rudy Guimond

A 19-year-old native of Point-Claire, Quebec, has taken an interesting path over the last couple of years. Midway through last year, Guimond was with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, posting average numbers in limited starts after a strong first season. Guimond took the opportunity to head closer to home and play in the QMJHL after the NCAA’s eligibility rule change. With the Moncton Wildcats, he had a .940 save percentage and 1.73 GAA in 16 games while remaining in the undefeated regular season and winning a QMJHL title with the club. Guimond’s cooled off slightly this year with a .927 save percentage and 2.23 GAA in 23 starts this season, but that’s not outside of expectations.

Some may flip his and Pradel’s placement on the list, but Pradel currently gets the nod because he is putting up such impressive numbers in Guimond’s former league while being a year younger.

Honorable mention:

Landon Miller

The Red Wings took Miller in the 2024 draft after a strong 23-24 season with the Soo Greyhounds with an .889 sv% and 2.79 GAA. Last year Miller appeared to have taken a step back with a 4.07 GAA and .877 GAA, but has been posting stronger numbers this year, matching his 23-24 save percentage The OHL overager has also lowered his GAA to 2.76 as the Greyhounds battle it out in the Canadian juniors.
