The NHL roster freeze is over.  General managers can now transact trades again.  There’s no rush.  The NHL trade deadline isn’t until March 21. But you can bet Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman is getting calls.



But GMs are already whittling down the list of potential trading partners and the Red Wings do have players, particularly some rental players, that some teams will want to talk about. What the Red Wings do at the trade deadline will depend on where the the Red Wings are in the standings. If the Red Wings are close, GM Steve Yzerman could do decide to let this rebuilding team scrap for a playoff spot. It could be a valuable learning experience. But that isn’t a likely scenario.
