The Winnipeg Jets’ fresh start includes removing veteran Blake Wheeler as the team’s captain. He had served in that role since 2016.
New coach Rick Bowness is looking for a leadership group to emerge.
“It is the determination of the coaching staff that we will enter the 2022-23 season without a specific captain but rather a group of assistants still be determined,” said Bowness said in a statement released by the team. “It is our goal to expand the leadership base within our hockey team.”
One of the Bowness mandates is to change the team’s dressing room culture. It seems as if part of the Bowness plan is to get more people involved in leadership with the hope of getting the players on the same page.
Meanwhile, the news in Boston had more optimism attached. David Pastrnak reiterated that he wants to stay with the Boston Bruins beyond this season. But he is not yet signed.
