The Daily: Red Wings trading wins rather than players; Capitals kaput after Orlov trade?

Detroit have been sellers for several seasons

Red Wings forward Andrew Copp was traded at least season's NHL trade deadline.

The timing of the hottest streak of the season for the Detroit Red Wings is not lost on center Andrew Copp. A year ago, Copp was packing his bags at this time of the year. The Winnipeg Jets were shipping Copp, at the time an impending UFA, to the New York Rangers prior to the NHL trade deadline. He would go on to sign with Detroit in July.

Deadline day this season is a week today on March 3. As Detroit was moving into a playoff spot on Thursday, for the first time in years, it would appear that the Red Wings will be prospecting for wins this season rather than futures.

“We were like, ‘if we’re gonna make a push, this is the time to do it,’” Copp said. “Especially around the trade deadline. Everyone knows what that means.

“This push has been great timing for us.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • A 4-1 win over the New York Rangers was moving Detroit into a playoff spot
  • Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde was describing the game misconduct assessed to captain Dylan Larkin on Tuesday as the right call
  • Jakub Vrana remains with the Red Wings. His assignment to AHL Grand Rapids was nothing more than a paper transaction
  • Thursday’s win over the New York Rangers was showing that Detroit finally understands how the club needs to play in order to win consistently

Red Wings Next Game
