On Feb. 23 the Detroit Red Wings dumped the New York Rangers 4-1 at Little Caesars Arena. The result left the Red Wings and Florida Panthers deadlocked for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff position, each with 64 points. However, Detroit clung to the postseason place based on percentage points.

It’s all gone downhill for the Wings ever since.

Monday, the Panthers dumped Detroit 5-2 at LCA. It dropped the Red Wings to 2-9-1 over their last 12 games. Over that same stretch of days, Florida is 7-2-1. The Panthers now have 79 points, 10 more than Detroit.

“Easy offense in a couple of situations for them,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “It felt like we had a really good chance to tie that game up. And then probably our inability to finish on a couple of our chances in the second. Probably could have got out of there with a second goal.

“It’s frustrating but it’s probably a reality of where it’s at.”

Carter Verhaeghe, with two, Matthew Tkachuk, Gustav Forsling and Eric Staal were the Florida scorers on Monday. Aleksander Barkov drew an assist on Forslund’s goal to become the all-time scoring leader in Panthers franchise history. He has 632 points, one more than Jonathan Huberdeau.

Pius Suter, with his second goal in as many games and captain Dylan Larkin, with his team-leading 26th of the season, replied for Detroit.

Edvinsson Plays Second NHL Game

With his parents and brother in attendance, rookie defenseman Simon Edvinsson played his second NHL game for the Red Wings.

He drew great cheers when he took out Tkachuk behind the Detroit net in the first period. However, Edvinsson also left the game briefly after absorbing a check from rugged Panthers defenseman Radko Gudas.

Panthers Dominating Red Wings

Florida extended its winning streak over Detroit to nine games. The Red Wings are 0-7-2 vs. the Panthers over that span. They’ve been outscored 40-15.
