The Daily: Guentzel Going, Going, But Not Gone; Rumors Galore

jake guentzel, pittsburgh penguins

One day before the NHL trade deadline, neither Jake Guentzel or the Pittsburgh Penguins know for sure where he’s going to be this weekend.

The Penguins are aggressively trying to move him as a rental player, but as of last night they hadn’t received the kind of offer that made them pull their trigger. By all accounts, they want at least three assets, and one needs to be a first-round pick and another needs to be a noteworthy prospect.

The Penguins hate to part with Guentzel and his scoring touch. When they move him, they want a return that will strengthen their below average prospect list and brighten their outlook for the future.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now sees the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights as prime contenders for Guentzel.  The Canucks’ issue is they don’t have a first-round draft pick to use as part of the deal. The Kings have a collection of prospects.

The Edmonton Oilers are also listed as a possibility for a Guentzel deal. Guentzel does have a modified no-trade clause.

The Golden Knights, making big moves Wednesday, are signalling that they are going all in an effort to win a second consecutive Stanley Cup.

Red Wings In Case You Missed

  • Avalanche buries Red Wings.  Colorado lights up Alex Lyon and James Reimer for seven goals.
  • Florida Panthers add more offensive firepower. Will Red Wings do anything before Friday’s trade deadline?
  • Former Detroit player Anthony Mantha transformed himself into a desirable trade deadline acquisition. The Golden Knights acquired him to help their offense.
  • The Red Wings may be looking to move Justin Holl. Would the Toronto Maple Leafs consider taking him back?

Red Wings Next Game

Detroit’s next game against the Arizona Coyotes isn’t truly a must-win game. But the Coyotes are 2-7-1 in their past 10 and they sit in 27th place out of 32 teams. The Red Wings, in a three-game losing streak, need to beat them to stop the bleeding. The Red Wings only have a four-point lead in the Eastern Conference wild card race.
