Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill opted for a movie reference to explain how personnel permutations and equations are swirling in his head these days as he contemplates the team’s final roster.

“It’s a little bit like that movie, ‘A Beautiful Mind,”‘  Blashill said. “You have all these numbers and we have an excel spreadsheet we work off of. We plan it ahead of time and then three guys get hurt and you kind of re-plan it.”

The difference is the Russell Crowe character was dealing with hallucinations in the film and Blashill faces reality that he only has 16 days until Detroit’s season opener. The Red Wings play the defending Stanley Cup Tampa Lightning at home on October 14.
