The Daily: Meier Talks Will Wait; Scary Fight; More Flyers Injuries

You know it is NHL preseason when the news of the day involves injuries, contract talks or fights. First, San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng reported that Timo Meier’s agent says there will be no talks about a contract extension until after the season.

This is one of the rare times when a negotiations delay makes sense for both parties.

Meier, 25, is earning $6 million this season. He will be a restricted free agent next summer. The San Jose Sharks want to see whether Swiss star Meier is really the 35-goal scorer he was last season. Meanwhile, Meier is hoping another strong season will enhance his value.

In other news, goalie Carter Hart is hurt in Philadelphia Flyers training camp. The Flyers have been overrun by injuries since last season.

Finally,  a preseason fight didn’t end well for defenseman Ben Harpur. He’s in the Columbus training camp on a PTO. Pittsburgh Penguins player Jamie Devane leveled Harpur with a hard punch. YouTube restricted the video as “inappropriate content.”

In Case You Missed It

Defenseman Robert Hagg, Joe Veleno added to the Red Wings’ injured list

Red Wings prize rookie defenseman Simon Edvinsson was a turnover factor in Red Wings Red & White Game.

New Detroit coach Derek Lalonde had plenty to say after the Red Wings’ annual intrasquad game in Traverse City.
