The Daily: Former Red Wings DeKeyser Dropped by Canucks; Barzal Deal Setting Bar For Larkin?
DeKeyser played 547 games for the Red Wings
It would appear that the days of former Detroit Red Wings rearguard Danny DeKeyser as an NHL defenseman are done. DeKeyser, 32, was released from a pro tryout with the Vancouver Canucks.

In the summer, the Red Wings were declining to offer DeKeyser a new contract after a decade and 547 NHL games with the club. A back injury requiring surgery ended up slowing DeKeyser to the point where he could no longer perform as an effective NHL defender.
Appearing in three preseason games with Vancouver, DeKeyser ended up logging on average 16:30 of ice time per game.
Barzal Deal Setting Bar For Larkin Pact?
The New York Islanders got the name of their best player on a new contract on Tuesday. Center Mathew Barzal and the team were agreeing to terms on an eight-year pact with an AAV of $9.15 million.
Will this deal help establish a baseline for new contract between the Red Wings and Dylan Larkin? While there certainly are differences in the situations – Barzal was heading to RFA status, while Detroit captain Larkin would be a UFA at season’s end – the fact of matter is that each franchise is viewing the player involved as a linchpin for future success.
When Larkin does sign – and he has expressed that he can’t see himself playing anywhere else – it’s expected that his AAV will fall into the $9 million range.
