The Daily: Can Red Wings Land A Scorer?; Happy Connor Bedard Day!

NASHVILLE — The Detroit Red Wings drafted Dylan Larkin 15th overall. Filip Zadina went sixth. Pavel Datsyuk was selected 171st overall in 1998. The Red Wings drafted offensive star Fred Williams fourth overall in 1976 and he scored two goals in 44 games in his NHL career.

The NHL draft can be a mixed bag.

But under Steve Yzerman, it has been productive (Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Simon Edvinsson, etc.) and always intriguing.  The Red Wings have not been among the handful of NHL teams that have made deals in the run-up to the tonight’s first round (ESPN at 7 p.m. ET). But it’s not been for a lack of desire.

Rival general managers say Yzerman is trying to land a scoring forward. He has been connected to negotiations for Ottawa’s Alex DeBrincat and Philadelphia’ Travis Konecny.

This is a deep draft, and Yzerman has five picks in the top 43. He is unlikely to move the No. 9 pick tonight because it will land him another important piece in the rebuild.  But he probably would move the No. 17 and one of his second rounders for a proven offensive player like either of those forwards.

Red Wings Offseason

The Red Wings have three second round picks for this draft. Fans can only hope the scenario goes better than it did in 2011 when three second round picks and chose Tomas Jurko (35th), Xavier Ouelllet (48th), Ryan Sproul (55th). They passed on Nikita Kucherov three times, plus John Gibson, William Karlsson and Brandon Saad.
