These days the best source of information about potential trades often come from the players themselves. San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson confirmed that he has talked to four NHL teams about playing for them.

The four teams are the Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, Seattle Kraken and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Penguins and Hurricanes were considered frontrunners for Karlsson, prior to this report.

Earlier this week, the Athletic’s Rob Rossi reported that Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby have endorsed bringing in Karlsson as part of an “all-in” effort for the franchise.

The biggest issue in the Sharks’ attempts to move recent Norris Trophy winner Karlsson is that they are unwilling to retain half of his $11.5 million. They will only retain a portion.

Red Wings Offseason

Red Line Report, an independent scouting newsletter that has been around three decades, ranked Detroit’s 2023 draft eighth out of 32 teams.  RLR said Detroit was the only team to land two of of the top 15 players in the draft crop (Nate Danielson and Axel Sandin Pellikka). Red Line’s head scout Kyle Woodlief considered Sandin Pellikka the best offensive defenseman in the draft.  Woodlief did criticize Detroit’s second-round picks because the thought the Red Wings took them at least a round too high.
