The Daily: The Karlsson Fallout in SJ; Is Tatar Talking to Penguins?

Unrestricted free agent Tomas Tatar said he talked to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but it’s not known whether he is in serious negotiations with the team. GM Kyle Dubas is keeping a lid on his personnel contemplation. Detroit Red Wings fan understand how that works.

There is some logic to the Penguins being interested in Tatar: He boasts seven seasons of 20+ goals in his 11 NHL seasons.

But Pittsburgh Hockey Now’s Dave Molinari looks at the pros and cons of the Penguins’ signing Tatar. The first issue is whether they can afford him. Tatar had a $4.5 million cap hit on his last contract, and a $3.2 million base salary last season. But even if Tatar accepted a one year deal for $1.6 million it wouldn’t be easy. The Penguins are currently very close to the salary cap ceiling.

If the Penguins sign Tatar, would it cost them the ability to keep a valuable role player? Tatar’s defensive ability is not his strong suit.
