The signing of NHL veteran Galchenyuk by SKA of the KHL could impact Red Wings prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov.

Detroit Red Wings prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov is battling for a spot in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg and Friday, that task became a little more challenging. Already over the KHL salary cap, SKA nonetheless was opting to sign NHL exile Alex Galchenyuk.

Galchenyuk became available when his contract with the Arizona Coyotes was terminated following Galchenyuk’s involvement in a hit and run accident that ultimately led to an altercation with police. His arrival in SKA could end up impacting forward Buchelnikov, Detroit’s 52nd overall selection in the 2022 NHL entry draft.

Buchelniknov, 19, who saw duty in 10 KHL games with SKA last season, has been skating on the club’s fourth line in KHL preseason action. Someone is going to get bumped down the depth chart to make a spot for NHL veteran Galchenyuk. Previously, there’s been speculation that SKA might be loaning Buchelnikov to another KHL club.

KHL regular-season play gets underway on Sept. 2.
