Red Wings Defensive Math May Not Work For Edvinsson (+)

Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde knew immediately he wanted defenseman Jeff Petry even though his arrival creates a math problem that is challenging to solve.

Lalonde’s task this season is to keep seven proven defensemen sharp and motivated when the preferred strategy is to dress six every game.

“It was a quick yes but with the understanding that we’d have to manage that, because now we’d have seven NHL-established D,” Lalonde said. “But it’s a luxury good to have.”
