Forrmer Red Wings forward Filip Zadina wasn't exactly getting a warm embrace from Detroit fans on his return with the Sharks.

This was the moment every Detroit Red Wings fan inside Little Caesars Arena was waiting for. Tie game, third period, Patrick Kane in all alone on San Jose Sharks goalie Kaapo Kahkonen.

On a breakway, Kane, making his Detroit debut, was quickly snapping a shot to Kahkonen’s glove side. It beat the goalie cleanly . . . and banked off the post.

After Detroit’s 6-5 overtime loss, Kane was philosophical about his missed opportunity to begin with a hero’s welcome.

“Throughout the game as an offensive player you always want to create chances,” Kane said. “You can live and die with hitting the post, or not capitalizing on your chances. But you want create and you want to play the right way for your team, too.

“Woulda been nice to bury that, though.”

Wait A Second

The eight-goal outburst in the second period included six goals in a span of 3:01. That was one second off the NHL record for the fastest two goals by two teams.

In 1981, the Washington Capitals and Quebec Nordiques combined for six goals in an elapsed time of exactly three minutes.

Kane Makes Seven First Overalls For Red Wings

When he skated his first shift Thursday, Kane, the first player chosen in the 2007 NHL entry draft, became the seventh first overall pick to play for the Red Wings who wasn’t selected by the Red Wings.

The others include Garry Monahan (1963), Greg Joly (1974), Mel Bridgman (1975), Rick Green (1976), Wendel Clark (1985), and Mike Modano (1988).

Ice Chips

Sharks forward and 2018 Red Wings first-round pick Filip Zadina received a luke warm response from the Little Caesars Arena crowd upon being given a welcome back message on the center ice Jumbotron. Zadina has 3-2-5 totals in 22 games for San Jose, along with a team-worst minus-19 rating . . . Fellow former Red Wings forward Givani Smith was a healthy scratch for the Sharks . . . Detroit center J.T. Compher was missing and is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
