When the Detroit Red Wings bypassed top goalie prospect Jesper Wallstedt to take Sebastian Cossa with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NHL draft, the team assured that Cossa would spend his pro career being compared to Wallstedt.  The Minnesota Wild drafted Swedish prospect Wallstedt 20th overall.

The Red Wings’ Cossa pick looked fine Friday night when he made 28 saves to best Wallstedt and lift the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 4-1 win against the Iowa Wild in American Hockey League action. The Griffins have now won four in a row, thanks to strong play by Detroit prospects, including Cossa. The 6-foot-6 Cossa owns a 6-6-3 record with a 2.95 goals-against average this season.

Defenseman Antti Tuomisto (drafted 35th by the Red Wings in 2019) scored his third goal over the past 10 games to help the Griffins. They are now in sole possession of third place in the AHL’s Central Division.

That’s good news for the Red Wings who tried to improve their farm team this offseason to provide a better training situation for their prospects.

Prospects Simon Edvinsson, Jonatan Berggren, Marco Kasper and Amadeus Lombardi were among the Griffins who assisted on the Grand Rapids goals. Defenseman Edvinsson (drafted sixth in 2021) has 19 points in 28 games.
