DETROIT — The Red Wings appreciate Alex Lyon’s style as much as his results. He can bring calm to the most hectic situations. Lyon can stop the room from spinning.

That was true Thursday when he earned his second shutout with the Red Wings on a 3-0 verdict against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Lyon has a quieting impact on the action. He also showed that last season with the Florida Panthers.

“He gets a whistle, doesn’t give up a rebound, makes a proper play of a puck handle,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “It’s been him for us. He takes away some of the chaos.”

Lyon made 29 saves as he continues to play a major role in Detroit’s push to earn a playoff spot for the first time in eight seasons. He had 29 saves against the Flyers. The team is 9-0-1 when he makes 29 or more saves.

“Not a huge volume night for him,” Lalonde said. “But I thought he managed it very well and got what he deserved, a shutout.”

Larkin Extends Streak

Dylan Larkin’s 20th goal of the season gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead and extended his points streak to 10 games. (7-6–13). He now has 199 career goals.

“Very important,” Lalonde said. “Obviously, he’s going to get a top matchup. The (Morgan) Frost line has been just hot, terrorizing of late. They’re expected goals the last 3-4-5 games is off the chart, so that was a very tough matchup and they won it tonight. That’s a positive and I loved the simple goal. After the first, we had a lot of possession time but we’d like to get more pucks to the net, create some havoc and that’s exactly how goal happened. It took three shot attempts to the net and all the sudden it’s on Larks’ stick on the back door and we find ourselves up.”

Jared Goff Chant

You would have thought you were at Ford Field, and not Little Caesars Arena, when fans started chanting “Jared Goff. Jared Goff” in the third period.

“We thought it was ‘Tangs is God! Tangs is God!’,” Lalonde joked.

Tangs is assistant coach Alex Tanguay.

“Of course, you hear (the Goff chant),” Lalonde said. ” A couple Lions are back in the room, the Michigan guys are back in the room. It’s the energy, the excitement. A fan myself, it’s been unbelievable to watch (the Lions success). Of course you can feel the energy and it’s awesome. This is an unbelievable time in Detroit. I’m glad we’re pitching in a little bit, playing at really high level. But how can you not be energized. This is flat out amazing, goose bump amazing. It’s awesome.”

Copper Goal

Andrew Copp scored shorthanded. It was his ninth goal of the season and the 100th of his career. “He’s a big player for us,” said Lucas Raymond who had two assists in the game. “The way he plays — he plays both ends. He’s huge for us on the PK. That line has been really good for us lately.”…
