The Daily: Berggren, Griffins Look to Extend Streaks; NHL Rumors

Jonatan Berggren, Red Wings prospect

Detroit Red Wings prospects Jonatan Berggren and Simon Edvinsson travel to the American Hockey League All-Star Game this weekend in San Jose (Feb. 4-5).  However, the All-Stars are not departing before Berggren and the Grand Rapids Griffins try to continue their streaks.

The Griffins will be pursuing their sixth consecutive win Friday on the road against Rockford, while Berggren is looking to extend his points streak to seven consecutive games.

Berggren has been one of the AHL’s best players this season: He has five goals and five assists during his six-game streak and 16 points in his past 11 games. Berggren leads the Griffins with 34 points, 13 goals and 21 assists in 30 games this season.  There’s not much left for Berggren to prove at the AHL level, except to show consistency in his two-way play.

The Griffins, meanwhile, also boast a six-game road win streak. If they beat Rockford, their seven-game road streak would tie a franchise record that was set in 2004 and tied in 2015.  Grand Rapids is 10-2-1-0 since Christmas.

Red Wings In Case You Missed

  • Injured Patrick Kane won’t play tonight against the Ottawa Senators. The Red Wings believe giving him an added eight days to recuperate will benefit him in the long run. He hasn’t played since Jan. 14 because of a lower body injury.
  • Former Red Wings player Tyler Bertuzzi has no goals in his past 14 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • Bob Duff writes that the Red Wings can’t afford to become emotional about another game with the Ottawa Senators.
  • Paywall story: The Detroit Red Wings schedule for the remainder of the season is friendlier than you think

Red Wings Next Game

The Detroit team takes on the Ottawa Senators tonight at 7 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena. The last time the two teams met captain Dylan Larkin ended up unconscious on the ice. The Red Wings know they can’t be overly emotional in this game, especially given how well they have been playing of late.  If the Red Wings win tonight, they would move into a points tie with the Tampa Bay Lightning for third place in the Atlantic Division.
