The Daily: Pens Seek King’s Ransom For Guentzel; Trade Rumors

Jake Guentzel, pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly hope to trade Jake Guentzel by this evening, and are looking for a big return.

TSN’s Darren Dreger says the Penguins are looking for a first-round pick, a young NHL player and prospects. The Penguins prospect pool is shallow and bringing in a King’s Ransom for Guentzel could help the team restock.

The Vancouver Canucks are very interested, and at various times several teams have been mentioned, including the Detroit Red Wings. The Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars may also be a possibility.

Teams have to look at this as a rental because Guentzel will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. If he has gone this far, he probably will want to explore his options instead of re-upping with a new team.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Joe Veleno has transformed himself into an indispensable forward who can play on a scoring line or a checking line.
  • The Grand Rapids Griffins fell to the Cleveland Monsters to end their points streak at 18 games. That is one short of the team record.
  • Dylan Larkin will be sidelined for two weeks with a lower body injury. The timing isn’t good with the Red Wings starting a four-game road trip and trying to hold off challenges for the Eastern wild card race.
  • Paywall story: Tim Robinson writes about how Marco Kasper developed during the Grand Rapids Griffins 18-game point streak. To subscribe to paywall stories, click here. We are offering a $10 discount this week on subscriptions. Use the promo code kevin10 to receive your discount.

Red Wings Next Game

Joe Veleno will center Detroit’s top line tonight with Larkin out of the lineup. The Red Wings play at Arizona Friday and will be in Las Vegas Saturday to play the Golden Knights.
