Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek drew an assist in Czechia's win over Germany.

And then there were three Detroit Red Wings players with a chance to call themselves world champions.

Thursday was quarterfinal day at the IIHF World Championship. Several Wings players who’d enjoyed strong tournaments were sent packing.

Switzerland and Detroit center Pius Suter were 7-0 in pool play. However, they were blanked 3-0 by the USA. The American lineup includes Detroit and Grand Rapids forward Riley Barber.

Czechia, featuring Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek and forward Jakub Vrana, netted three power-play goals. As a result, they dropped Detroit defenseman Moritz Seider and 6-1-1 Germany 4-1. Hronek dished out an assist. Seider tallied Germany’s only goal.

Elsewhere, Canada rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Sweden and Red Wings goalie Magnus Hellberg 4-3 in overtime. In the only quarterfinal not featuring current Red Wings, Finland doubled Slovakia 4-2.

Consequently in Saturday’s semifinals, Finland is playing the USA. Canada and Czechia clash in the other semifinal.
