What the Detroit Red Wings need to happen this offseason to be more competitive in the NHL's 2022-23 seaso

With the NHL trade deadline now visible on the horizon,  Nick Leddy is growing in popularity. Several pundits have already listed him as likely to be traded. The Detroit Red Wings probably haven’t reached any decision on Leddy.

But the logic of moving him is sound. Although the Red Wings are more competitive this season, it’s unlikely they will qualify for the postseason.

Leddy will be an unrestricted free agent. If the team is going to miss the playoffs, then it’s better to get something in return for his services. Even if they want to resign him, they could still do it in the offseason. They could move Thomas Greiss, Vladislav Namestnikov or Marc Staal. However, no one in that trio will fetch a strong return.
