Steve Yzerman, Detroit Red Wings GM

The Detroit Red Wings have $9.8 million in cap space remaining and GM Steve Yzerman said he is not necessarily done adding players to his roster.

“We’ll continue in the offseason to see what if anything (we can do), some more free agents still out there or even look at potential trades,” Yzerman said.

The Red Wings will spend some of that space to re-sign restricted free agent Joe Veleno. But there are teams out trying to move desirable veterans.

“Generally, after July 1 and 2, things start to settle down and teams re-evaluate where they are, what they need to do an for various reasons might have to make a move,” Yzerman said. “… and we’ll explore some other opportunities potentially.”

Red Wings Offseason

The Grand Rapids Griffins added Finnish goalie coach Roope Koistinen to be their goalie coach. Plus, the Red Wings added to the Griffins’ roster depth by signing 6-foot-3 center Nolan Stevens. He had 33 points in 48 games last season for Utica in the American Hockey League. He is the son of Vegas Golden Knights assistant coach John Stevens.

In Case You Missed It

  • The Red Wings place Filip Zadina on waivers. His agent asked GM Steve Yzerman to give Zadina a chance for a fresh start.
  • Shayne Gostisbehere has the slickness to put a charge in Detroit’s power play. He signed a one-year deal.
  • Red Wings draft pick Larry Keenan has the NHL in his DNA. His grandfather, also named Larry, played in the NHL.
