The Red Wings have trailed in 11 of 13 games during the 2023-24 NHL season.

The Detroit Red Wings were learning a harsh lesson about the hole-digging business during Tuesday’s 5-3 road loss to the New York Rangers. If you keep shoveling deeper, eventually you won’t be able to climb out.

This setback would mark the sixth game in a row in which the Red Wings have found themselves trailing 2-0 and there’s a clear pattern developing in those six games. Detroit is 2-4.

Catch up hockey is losing hockey and a .333 winning percentage is going to get the Red Wings back into the draft lottery and not into a postseason position for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

They need to nip these slow starts in the bud ASAP before it buries them.
