The Daily: Red Wings Suddenly Need a Goalie; Should ‘Hawks Sign Kessel?

Ville Husso, Red Wings

Last week, the Detroit Red Wings were talking about the challenges that come from carrying three goalies on their roster. Today, they wish they had a fourth.

As Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff chronicled, goalie Ville Husso was injured in Detroit’s 4-3 loss to theĀ  Anaheim Ducks Monday. That came after goalie Alex Lyon was injured in the Red Wings’ 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday. That now leaves Detroit with James Reimer as the team’s only healthy goalie.

The other signed goalies in the Detroit organization are prize prospect Sebastian Cossa (Grand Rapids Griffins) and John Lethemon (Toledo Walleye). Former NHL goalie Michael Hutchison, currently playing with the Griffins, is on an AHL contract. The Red Wings would have to sign him to use him as Reimer’s backup in Winnipeg.

While Cossa may seem like the logical choice to some, he is only 21. Young goalies don’t have a good history in NHL games. We should know mid-afternoon what Detroit GM Steve Yzerman will do because the team needs to get the player to Winnipeg. What they learn about Husso’s and Lyon’s injuries today could influenceĀ  their decision.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde says his team is in a “fragile” state, especially with only one healthy goalie
  • Alex DeBrincat emerges from goal drought with a pair of goals in the 4-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
  • Ā Paywall story: Prospect Antti Tuomisto is working his way back from a shoulder injury in Grand Rapids.
  • Paywall story: Jonatan Berggren now has 17 goals in 72 NHL games. He’s doing all he can to earn a permanent place on the Red Wings

Red Wings Next Game

The Detroit squad (15-12-4) will be on the road Wednesday to play the Winnipeg JetsĀ  (18-9-3). The Red Wings are 1-5-1 in their last seven games. The Red Wings will undoubtedly make call-ups today from Grand Rapids because they only have one healthy goalies. Plus, Kim Kostin is injured. The Jets have been playing well, boasting a 6-1-1 record in their last eight games.
