The Daily: Proposed Devils Deal Could Impact Red Wings; Detroit Rallies

Insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the New Jersey Devils have engaged with the Calgary Flames about the possibility of acquiring goalie Jacob Markstrom.  New Jersey Now’s James Nichols has the story of the Devils goaltending problems.

Eastern Conference general managers, including Detroit Red Wings, must be concerned about the potential deal because the Devils are a quality team that could receive a lift from Markstrom or another proven goalie acquisition. They have the talent to string together wins.

Markstrom does have a no-trade clause in his contract. It’s unknown whether he has agreed to play in New Jersey.

The Devils were expected to compete for the Metropolitan Division title this season, but numerous injured players (including Dougie Hamilton and Jack Hughes) have undermined their progress. In addition, the Devils goaltending underlying goalie numbers have been at the bottom of NHL goalies.

Despite their issues, the Devils are still only six points out of one of the wild card positions currently owned by the surging Red Wings.
