The Daily: What’s Up With Red Wings Goaltending?; Are the Pens Done?

Ville Husso, Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings will provide an update today on Ville Husso’s health at their morning skate. Husso suffered another injury (lower body) in the first period of the Red Wings’ 8-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday. The Finnish netminder had just returned to the lineup after eight weeks on the injured list.

Husso left after a giving up a goal to Leon Draisaitl, but coach Derek Lalonde said he was hurt before that goal.

Alex Lyon has been playing impressively, but Husso’s return — provided he played well — would giveLalonde another option. Husso has played well in stretches in his time in Detroit. The Red Wings certainly don’t want to overwork Lyon who has already played the most NHL games (23) he has ever played in season.

Lyon’s .759 save percentage (seven goals, 29 shots) against Edmonton was his worst of the season. Coach Derek Lalonde hasn’t yet said who will play tonight against Vancouver in the second game of the road trip. James Reimer is Lyon’s backup until Husso is ready again. Husso had looked sharp in his one conditioning start for the Grand Rapids Griffins. He posted a 3-0 shutout against the Belleville Senators.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Red Wings loan defenseman Jared McIsaac to a team in Switzerland. The details are in Bob Duff’s notebook.
  • Goalie Ville Husso didn’t get through the first period in his first game back from eight weeks on the injured list. We should receive more information about his latest injury today.
  • Behind the paywall: Former Red Wings prospect Albin Grewe can’t stay out of trouble in Swedish hockey.
  • Detroit prospect Jack Phelen suffered a lower body injury and will be out of action for a while in the USHL.

Red Wings Next Game

Coach Derek Lalonde will be looking for his Detroit squad to rebound after playing a disastrous third period in an 8-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday.  It was the first time this season, the Red Wings have given up seven or more goals. The Red Wings beat Vancouver in overtime on Saturday in Detroit.
