Alex Lyon will be playing goal in the Detroit Red Wings organization during the 2023-24 season. He could be with the Red Wings, but will more than likely find a landing place as the No. 1 goalie for the club’s top farm club, the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.
According to a story posted at Carolina Hockey Now, a year ago, that Lyon was playing at all nearly ended up resulting in the firing of his coach.

Lyon was the go-to goalie for the Chicago Wolves in the 2022 AHL Calder Cup final. At the time, the Wolves were the top farm club of the Carolina Hurricanes. In an interview published by Inside AHL Hockey, Wolves GM and former NHL goalie Wendell Young states that the Hurricanes told coach Ryan Warsofsky he’d be dismissed if he was to continue playing AHL veteran Lyon ahead of top prospect Pyotr Kochetkov.
“Our coach was being dictated on who to play in goal,” Young explained to InsideAHLHockey.com. “Lineups had to go through Carolina.”
The Wolves will be playing in the AHL this season indepenent of NHL affiliation. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes remain without an NHL affiliate for 2023-24.
