Former Red Wings forward Lane Lambert intends to be hands on in his second season as New York Islanders coach.

It was 40 years ago this fall that two Detroit Red Wings rookie forwards were about to launch 20-goal seasons for the club. One of the was Steve Yzerman, who’d end up leading the club with 39 goals and 87 points. The other was a fellow who was sharing an apartment with Yzerman that season – Lane Lambert.

Now, four decades later, Lambert finds himself heading into a sophomore campaign as an NHL head coach with the New York Islanders. After making a first-round playoff exit last season, Lambert’s intention is to take a more hands on approach with the Islanders, expecially in the area of special teams. The Islanders were third from the bottom with the man advantage among NHL teams during the 2022-23 campaign.

“I’ll do a little bit more overseeing both areas of special teams,” Lambert told Andrew Fantucchio of NYIHockey Now.
