The Daily: Sorting Out Red Wings Cuts; Crosby Drops Gloves

Simon Edvinsson, Red Wings

The probability that the Detroit Red Wings will start the season with three goalies (Ville Husso, James Reimer and Alex Lyon) seemed likely based on the team’s Friday’s roster cuts.

After the Red Wings released goalie Andrew Hutchinson, he was immediately signed to a tryout contract by the Grand Rapids Griffins. Detroit’s top prospect Sebastian Cossa also was sent to Grand Rapids. If the Griffins are planning to go with Cossa and Hutchinson, at least for now, that means Lyon is staying in Detroit or the Red Wings wanted a Plan B in case they lose Lyon in the waiver process.

Several NHL teams, including the Tampa Bay Lightning, are looking for a goalie. Lyon is on everyone’s radar because he played well for the Florida Panthers’ last season.  Another option is the Red Wings could trade Lyon to Tampa Bay or another team.  Friday’s cuts also leaves Detroit fans wondering if defenseman Simon Edvinsson and 2023 first-round pick Nate Danielson will make the team. Lalonde hinted Friday that Detroit will only carry seven defensemen. That would mean Edvinsson would be headed to Grand Rapids.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby dropped the gloves in a Saturday preseason game. You didn’t see that coming, did you?

Red Wings’ Next Game

Detroit is home tonight to play its final preseason game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Red Wings plan to primarily use regulars, although coach Derek Lalonde said he will use some bubble players. Youngsters Nate Danielson and Simon Edvinsson are still on the roster, although Lalonde, as of Friday, had not decided if they will play.
