Hockey is a small and tight-knit community, so it wasn’t at all surprising to learn that there were connections between Detroit Red Wings players and former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson.

Johnson, who died Saturday in a tragic accident when his throat was cut by a skate during a game playing pro hockey in England with the Nottingham Panthers, was a former teammate of three players in the Detroit organization.

Most recently, he teamed up with current Red Wings center Joe Veleno while the two were playing for Malmo of the SHL during the 2019-20 season. Johson was also a teammate of injured Red Wings forward Matt Luff with the AHL’s Ontario Reign. In Pittsburgh and with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, he skated alongside current Grand Rapids Griffins forward Zach Aston-Reese.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Are the Red Wings still going to be players in the Patrick Kane UFA sweepstakes?
  • Other than Joe Veleno, it looks as though all of the Detroit players have suddenly forgot how to score
  • Red Wings goalie Ville Husso knows he’s been lacking his A-game ofr much of the early part of the NHL season
  • He was only a Red Wings player briefly, but Ed Sandford was involved in perhaps the worst trade the club ever made
