The Daily: No Krejci in Boston; Briere’s Son Finds a Hockey Job

The Boston Bruins, as expected, are losing David Krejci. And their loss is a gain for every other team in the Atlantic Division, including the Detroit Red Wings. The erosion of the Bruins’ depth continued Tuesday when a source told the Boston Hockey Now that David Krejci will play his only hockey for the Czechia national team in upcoming season.

He is not returning to the Boston Bruins.

That means the Bruins have lost Patrice Bergeron (retirement), Krejci (semi-retirement) and Taylor Hall (trade). They were also unable to re-sign Garnet Hathaway, Tyler Bertuzzi, Dimitri Orlov and Connor Clifton.

The Bruins will still have a talent-laden team, but probably won’t be as strong as they were a season ago. The team’s No. 1 center will either be Charlie Coyle or Pavel Zacha. The Bruins don’t have the cap space to add any significant players.

With the Tampa Bay Lightning’s depth also on the decline and the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings theoretically on the rise, there is some mystery to what the Atlantic Division will look like in 2023-24.

Red Wings’ Offseason

Detroit prospect defenseman Anton Johansson (two goals, one assist) has played impressively well for Sweden at the World Junior Summer Showcase.  Plug him in right after Simon Edvinsson, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Albert Johansson and William Wallinder on your Red Wings’ prospect defenseman list.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Axel Sandin Pellikka, a Red Wings’ 2023 first-round draft pick, scored the game-winning goal for Sweden in a 3-2 win against Finland at the World Junior Summer Showcase Wednesday.
  • Red Wings who need to step up offensively in 2023-24: Andrew Copp is on the list
  • Slava Fetisov vs. Dominik Hasek III or is it IV? They are at it again.
  • Trey Augustine is a soft-spoken person who plays an impressively calm, quiet, poised game in net. Bob Duff has the details.
